Understanding Root Canals

A root canal is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay, infection, or trauma. Instead of extracting the tooth, a dentist carefully removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside, and then seals it to prevent further problems. Modern root canals are comfortable, highly effective, and allow patients to keep their natural teeth for years to come.

What are signs that I might need a root canal?

A root canal is needed when the inside of a tooth becomes infected or damaged. Here are some common signs to watch for:

Tooth pain that won’t go away – especially when chewing or biting
Sensitivity to hot or cold – that lingers even after the temperature is gone
Swollen or tender gums – near the problem tooth
A dark or discolored tooth – could mean the nerve is damaged
A pimple or bump on the gums – may be a sign of infection
Bad taste or smell in the mouth – can come from a draining infection

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t wait — early treatment can save your tooth and stop the pain. We’re here to help!

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Choosing root canal therapy offers several benefits compared to tooth extraction. It preserves your natural tooth structure, maintains proper chewing function, and helps protect nearby teeth from excessive strain. Most importantly, root canals relieve pain and restore your smile without the need for more invasive treatments.

What’s Involved in a Root Canal?

  • Diagnosis & X-Ray: We begin with a detailed examination and digital X-rays to determine the extent of the infection and plan treatment.
  • Local Anesthesia: To ensure comfort, the area around the affected tooth is numbed so you feel little to no pain during the procedure.
  • Cleaning the Tooth: A small opening is made in the tooth, and the infected pulp is carefully removed. The canals are cleaned and disinfected.
  • Filling & Sealing: The cleaned root canals are filled with a special material (gutta-percha) to prevent reinfection, and the tooth is sealed.
  • Restoration: A crown or filling is placed on the treated tooth to restore its strength, function, and natural appearance.

Pain After Root Canal Treatment

It’s normal to feel some sensitivity or mild discomfort in the days following your root canal. This usually occurs as the surrounding tissue heals and should gradually improve.

What’s Normal?

  • Mild soreness when chewing or biting
  • Temporary sensitivity in the treated tooth
  • Discomfort that improves with over-the-counter pain relief

When to Call Your Dentist
