Services & Procedures
Young children go through many stages with their dental development. At First Care Dental, we watch these changes carefully so we can make sure your child’s oral health is always protected.
Your child has very specific dental needs that are different from those of an adult. With very young children, we focus on protecting baby teeth and keeping them healthy until permanent teeth are ready to come in. As your child gets older, we focus more on prevention to set the stage for problem-free oral health when they’re adults.
Putting Your Child at Ease
It’s understandable that kids are apprehensive about visiting the dentist. They’re in a completely new environment with lots of strange-looking machines and people they don’t know.
As a parent, you just want to be assured that your child will be safe and comfortable. Dr. Don Ton and Dr. Jennifer Yen have close to 20 years of experience in catering to the needs of kids. You can be sure that we know exactly how to approach kids so that they develop a happy, positive attitude about dental care.
It’s important that we don’t do anything that will cause your child anxiety during their visits. If needed, we can offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is very effective and completely safe for children. Your child will be able to relax during the appointment, and nitrous wears off almost immediately after the mask is removed.
Childhood Dental Issues
We do everything possible to prevent dental problems from developing in the first place. Regular exams and cleanings are the first step in fighting dental decay and disease. But your child may need more advanced treatment to make sure their teeth are protected.
If we find decay and can’t repair the problem with a filling, we’ll suggest a baby dental crown. Baby crowns are very affordable and will protect the baby tooth until it’s ready to come out naturally.
If decay in a baby tooth is very advanced, it may penetrate the pulp of your child’s tooth. The pulp will become inflamed and irritated and your child will experience a toothache. At this point we’ll need to perform a pulpotomy, where we remove the infected pulp to protect the tooth and prevent infection from spreading.
A frenectomy is another procedure that’s commonly used for children. There are thin bands of tissue under the upper lip and tongue, and either can create problems if they’re too tight or too large. We can solve the problem by removing the bands during a quick procedure done under general anesthesia at the hospital.
